Chapter Two – Hellos
Lily took the sedative that the doctor had prescribed for her. She did not like flying, and definitely not alone, so she was happy to swallow the little pill. Then she took out her copy of Julia Quinn’s The Duke and I and settled her back against the seat. The seatbelt light had gone off, the aircraft was airborne, and she was hoping the pill would kick in soon, so her heart rate would decrease and she could breathe better. She opened the book to the page her bookmarker was stuck in, and began to read Chapter Three. Soon the story had her so she forgot where she was, and she was smiling as she enjoyed the writer’s style. She didn’t know when she fell asleep…
...Lily tried to keep hold of her messenger bag, but her assailant shoved her hard, kicking her arm repeatedly when she fell until she let it go. She tried to call out for help, but the gathering darkness swirled around before her eyes and swallowed her in its depths. When she woke up, she was lying on a gurney in the ER, trying to remember what had happened to her, while the doctor and nurses attended to her injuries. She was admitted, and they gave her a sedative. The next time she woke up, bright sunlight was blinding her, and Ellie was standing over her, calling her name softly. Tears welled up, and Ellie hugged her while she cried…
…“He pushed me,” Lily told the detective.
“How do you know it was a man?” He asked her.
She frowned and shook her head. “He pushed me hard, so I thought it was a man. He punched me and pushed me.” Her head began to hurt, and tears welled up again, though she had been trying to stop them.
“Did you see what he was wearing?” The detective asked.
“No. It was dark, and he was behind me…”
…“You can’t stay here, Lily,” Ellie told her. “I’m calling Ricky. You call the police.”
Lily was tired. She had just been released from the hospital, and Ellie had come home with her, where they opened the door to an apartment that had been trashed beyond recognition. What they were looking for, Lily had no clue, but she was badly frightened now and did as she was bid without any argument. A squad car came round while she stood in her bedroom trying to decide if there was anything she wanted to take with her.
The cops were not particularly helpful. They asked her who she thought might do this to her place, and if she knew why they had done it. As the answer to both questions was no, the best advice they could give her was to go home with her sister and wait for them to call her if they found any fingerprints other than hers and Ellie’s…
Lily woke with a start. The aircraft was shuddering, but no one else seemed to be worried about it. She straightened her spine and pressed the call button for the stewardess.
